Why we made the Sofa Sidekick

The eighteen months

Eighteen months ago, I had a copper tumbler balanced on the armrest of a leather sofa. The tumbler tipped. The leather stained. I went looking for a product to solve this. Surely it existed.

It existed, sort of. There were clamp-on cup holders that scratched the upholstery, plastic clips that looked like they came free with a cable subscription, and weighted trays that solved the cup problem but not the remote-or-phone problem. Nothing that I would actually want sitting on my couch.

What we made

So we made one. The first prototype was made of sliced silicone we ordered as a sample from a manufacturer in Shenzhen. The second prototype had the cup well in the wrong place. The third prototype slid off leather. The seventh prototype, eighteen months in, gripped fabric and leather, held a 16-ounce can, and looked like furniture instead of a gadget.

That is the Sofa Sidekick. The version we are shipping in May 2026 is the version that survived every test we ran, in three different test couches, across two years of daily use in our test apartment.

Why we relaunched it

The first version shipped in early 2023. It sold 301 units, earned a 4.7-star average across 50 reviews, and taught us a lot about what a real Amazon FBA launch requires. It also taught us what was wrong with the first version: thin silicone walls, slightly-too-narrow cup well, generic listing copy with no brand identity, and poly-bag packaging that pushed us into the wrong shipping bracket.

The relaunch fixes all of that. Thicker silicone walls. Wider cup well with a removable insert for smaller cups. Real listing copy in our voice. Box packaging that hits the right shipping bracket. New photography. New A+ Content. A real brand presence.

What is next

The Sidekick franchise extends beyond the couch. We are testing prototypes for the bed, the bath, the desk, and the car. None of them are ready to ship in 2026. All of them will follow the same brief: solve a real moment of daily friction without adding a new one. Made well. Quiet enough that the object does the talking.

The next Sidekick will ship when it passes the same tests as the Sofa Sidekick. Not before.

What we believe
